Sutter Football was a central part of my time at SUHS. In fact, I actually chose to attend SUHS over Jesuit High School, where my older brother attended, and that decision was largely influenced by my desire to be a Husky and play alongside my childhood friends. It’s hard to imagine any memory from SUHS that isn’t, in one way or another, linked to my experience playing football.
Participating in any team sport will prepare you for navigating life after high school. However, football is the ultimate team sport that demands a level of teamwork beyond most other sports. When I left Sutter to attend Georgia Tech and study biomedical engineering, the grit I learned on the football field carried me through the long nights of studying, tucked away in a library corner. It also taught me to lean on those around me and ask for help when I needed it. My coaches at SUHS instilled in me the humility to never be too proud to seek mentorship in times of adversity.
Enjoy every minute that you get to wear that Husky uniform. You will look back on these years as some of the best memories of your life. Look out for one another. If you see a teammate struggling, step up and be there for them. Your strength as a team comes from the relationships you build on and off the field. Respect your coaches. It’s hard to appreciate at the time just how much they sacrifice to build the experience you get to call SUHS Football. You are incredibly blessed by the men leading you.

For me, it all began the summer before my freshman year. I grew up watching Sutter football games and dreamed of the day I would finally wear the blue and gold as a Husky.
Because I was always over the weight limit, I never had the opportunity to play Pop Warner football. High school football became my first chance to play the game I loved. As a freshman, I heard about the Lions All-Star Football Game for graduating seniors, and I made it my goal to one day earn a spot on that team. After my senior season, I was honored to be selected, and our team went on to defeat the North 28-14, ending a five-game losing streak. It was a great way to finish my football career.
When I look back, what stands out most isn’t the wins or the awards it’s the people. Coaches Allan Jaynes, Steve Boroni, Scott Turner, and Ryan Reynolds invested in me not only as a football player, but as a young man. They taught me discipline, accountability, humility, teamwork, and the value of hard work. Those lessons have stayed with me every day since.
The impact of Sutter Football didn’t end when I graduated. It inspired me to return and coach in the program for several years because I wanted to give back to the next generation the same way my coaches gave to me. Even today, I stay connected to the program and enjoy following the players, coaches, and the continued success of Sutter Football.
The lessons I learned on the football field have carried over into every part of my life. They have helped me as a husband, a father, a business leader, and during my eight years serving as a Sutter County Supervisor. Sutter Football helped build the work ethic, leadership, and character that I rely on every day.
My advice to current and future Huskies is simple: enjoy every moment. Appreciate every practice, every weightlifting session, every bus ride, and every Friday night under the lights because those memories last a lifetime.
Most importantly, never take a play off. I still remember a game against Marysville during my junior year. We had just driven down the field and were on the five-yard line when I took a play off because I was tired. A senior teammate immediately let me know that wasn’t acceptable. That lesson stuck with me, and I never took another play off. Give your best effort every day, whether it’s on the football field, in the classroom, or later in life.
Listen to your coaches. They genuinely want to help you become a better athlete, a better teammate, and most importantly, a better person. The game eventually ends, but the lessons you learn through Sutter Football will stay with you for the rest of your life.
Built in the Buttes isn’t just a slogan—it’s a way of life. Once you’re a Husky, you’ll always be a Husky.

While playing football for Sutter High School, I was proud to be part of something much bigger than myself. I looked up to the coaches who led us and the players who came before us, setting a standard that we worked every day to uphold. Football was never just a game, it was a lifestyle. Every Friday night felt like walking onto a battlefield, knowing that success would be earned through preparation, discipline, and sacrifice.
Something I realized during this time was that the toughest opponents I faced were often the teammates standing across from me in practice. Day after day, we pushed each other to improve, competing with the same intensity we brought to Friday nights. I was fortunate to be surrounded by incredible talent, but even more importantly, by teammates who inspired the best in one another. Together, we built a culture of accountability, toughness, and pride that showed on the football field.
Sutter football played a significant role in shaping my professional career. Football taught me discipline, accountability, teamwork, and perseverance. These qualities have been essential throughout my career. Football required commitment, preparation, and the ability to perform under pressure while working toward a common goal. It taught me that success is achieved through hard work, sacrifice, and trust in those around you.
As I progressed in my career, particularly in leadership positions, I found myself relying on many of the lessons I learned on the Sutter football field. The importance of leading by example, maintaining composure during challenging situations, and putting the team's success above individual recognition are principles that have guided my professional career. Sutter football also instilled a competitive drive that helped me overcome obstacles and remain focused on long-term objectives.
Looking back, Sutter football was more than a sport, it was an early leadership and character-development experience that prepared me for the responsibilities, challenges, and opportunities I would encounter throughout my career. The values I learned as a student-athlete at Sutter High School continue to influence how I lead, serve others, and approach adversity today.
"Enjoy every moment, it goes by faster than you think. Right now, the practices, the workouts, and the Friday night games may seem like they'll last forever, but one day you'll look back and realize how special this time was.
Take pride in wearing the jersey. You're not just playing for yourself; you're representing every player who came before you, your teammates beside you, your coaches, your school, and your community.”

Sutter Football was about so much more than football to our family—it was a community, a tradition, and a second family.
One of my greatest joys has been watching Caden grow from a young athlete into the college football player and young man he is today. Through Sutter Football, I watched him develop confidence, leadership, accountability, perseverance, and a work ethic that continues to serve him well.
His senior year brought one of the toughest challenges of his life when he suffered a serious collarbone injury. As a mom, it was heartbreaking to watch him go through surgery and wonder if his season was over. But I was incredibly proud to watch him fight his way back, return to the field for the Section Championship game, and help his team win in overtime against Paradise. That experience showed the strength, determination, and heart that Sutter Football helped instill in him.
Some of my favorite memories are the traditions that make Sutter Football so special
-Friday night lights, the horses circling the track during the national anthem , team dinners, Huskie Dinner, the Sutter Cutt meal, the Cow Plop fundraiser, and the excitement of playoff football. Those moments brought players, families, coaches, and the entire community together. What stands out most is the way everyone supported one another. The friendships, memories, and sense of family created through this program will last a lifetime. I am grateful for the coaches who believed in Caden, pushed him to be his best, and helped prepare him not only for college football but for life beyond the game.
Being part of Sutter Football has been one of the most meaningful experiences for our family, and the memories we made will always hold a special place in our hearts.

As one of the few who has been blessed enough to be able to play football in college, that transition from high school to college was easier for me than most. Due to how serious the staff at Sutter took preparation, and making it feel as college like as possible. Some of the coaches I was fortunate enough to be coached by helped instill the confidence in me that has gotten me to where I am today. I had many goals for myself and Sutter football helped me more than I could have ever imagined. My senior year did not go exactly how I planned, I suffered an injury that sidelined me for majority of the season. My first game returning from injury was the section championship, where we won in overtime against paradise high school. With that being said that entire senior year was probably my favorite memory because everyone was there for me while I was going through a tough time period in life and football. During my 4 years, I met some of my best friends that I still talk to daily. Without the impact that Sutter football had on my life there was no way I would have achieved as much success as I have.

Sutter Football played a huge role in shaping who I am today. Looking back, it gave me far more than just championship rings. It taught me discipline, accountability, resilience, and what it means to be part of something bigger than yourself.
While those core principles have carried me far in life, the greatest thing about Sutter Football is the community. Sutter gave me a family. It provided stability during times of uncertainty, companionship when I felt alone, meals when I was hungry, mentors when I needed direction, transportation when I couldn’t get to school, confidence when I had none, and an identity I could be proud of.
The program changed the trajectory of my life. Saying it opened doors that otherwise would not have been available to me would be an understatement. Because of Sutter Football, I earned a full ride football scholarship to Sacramento State. That opportunity allowed me to earn my degree, become a deputy probation officer, attend law school, and ultimately become an attorney for the State of California.
The lessons I learned at Sutter continue to influence how I approach life today. The work ethic, perseverance, and commitment to excellence that were expected every day on the football field are the same qualities I strive to live by.
To current and future Huskies, I would say this: The only things you can truly control in life are your attitude and your work ethic. So always be kind and work hard. Football eventually ends, but the lessons, relationships, and opportunities it creates will shape the rest of your life. I will always be grateful for everything Sutter Football gave me.
Go Huskies! #sutrcut
